Riviera is an Italian term originally from the Middle Ages for the coast of Liguria. The term is now more generally applied to any coastal area popular with tourists, particularly in warm areas. The two divisions of the original Riviera, both of which border the Ligurian Sea, are:
- Italian Riviera, that part of the coast of Italy between La Spezia and the frontier with France, at Ventimiglia.
- French Riviera, that part of the coast of France between the frontier with Italy and the environs of Monaco, in the eastern part of the Alpes Maritimes département. The French Riviera is not to be confused with the Côte d'Azur, which is a much larger entity and includes extensive hinterland.
