Henri Matisse (French pronunciation: [ɑ̃ʁi matis]; 31 December 1869 – 3 November 1954) was a French artist, known for his use of colour and his fluid and original draughtsmanship. He was a draughtsman, printmaker, and sculptor, but is known primarily as a painter. Matisse is regarded, along with Picasso and Marcel Duchamp, as one of the three seminal artists of the 20th century, responsible for significant developments in painting and sculpture. Although he was initially labelled a Fauve (wild beast), by the 1920s he was increasingly hailed as an upholder of the classical tradition in French painting. His mastery of the expressive language of colour and drawing, displayed in a body of work spanning over a half-century, won him recognition as a leading figure in modern art.

What are two differences in how Matisse and Picasso handled their subjects?
Q. 10 easy points to best answer.
Asked by Deanna - Tue Feb 3 12:10:22 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Side by side, the works of Picasso and Matisse can look amazingly similar. However, at a much deeper level they are radically incompatible. Personality wise - Picasso is a hot tempered Spaniard, Matisse is calm & collected artist from Northern Europe. As far as their art is concerned - Picasso loves flesh and his works are often painted in a very sexual nature. Furthermore, they oftentimes encompasses feelings of dissonance and violence. Matisse, on the other hand, loves fabric and paints in a sensual nature. His works tend to be luxurious and harmonious. You can actually find a lot on this particular topic on the web, as Matisse & Picasso were rivals of sorts.

A. In 1901 Matisse met Vlaminck and Derain and discovered the power of colour. By 1905 he was producing some of the most powerful and innovating works that later became known as 'fauvism'. It was a French term which means 'wild beast' first coined by the poet Guillaume Apollinaire who was actually a friend of the new artists at the time.
