Italy (pronounced /ˈɪtəli/ ( listen); Italian: Italia [iˈtaːlja]), officially the Italian Republic (Italian: Repubblica italiana), is a country located partly on the European Continent and partly on the Italian Peninsula in Southern Europe and on the two largest islands in the Mediterranean Sea, Sicily and Sardinia. Italy shares its northern, Alpine boundary with France, Switzerland, Austria and Slovenia. The independent states of San Marino and the Vatican City are enclaves within the Italian Peninsula, and Campione d'Italia is an Italian exclave in Switzerland. The territory of Italy covers 301,338 km² and is influenced by a temperate seasonal climate. With 60.4 million inhabitants, it is the sixth most populous country in Europe, and the twenty-third most populous in the world.

Italy's capital, Rome, was for centuries the political centre of Western civilisation, as the capital of the Roman Empire. After its decline, Italy would endure numerous invasions by foreign peoples, from Germanic tribes such as the Lombards and Ostrogoths, to the Normans and later, the Byzantines, among others. Centuries later, Italy would become the birthplace of the Renaissance, an immensely fruitful intellectual movement that would prove to be integral in shaping the subsequent course of European thought.

Through much of its post-Roman history, Italy was fragmented into numerous kingdoms and city-states (such as the Kingdom of Sardinia, the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies and the Duchy of Milan), but was unified in 1861, following a tumultuous period in history known as the "Risorgimento". In the late 19th century, through World War I, and to World War II, Italy possessed a colonial empire, which extended its rule to Libya, Eritrea, Somalia, Ethiopia, Albania, Rhodes, the Dodecanese and a concession in Tianjin, China.

Modern Italy is a democratic republic. It has been ranked the world's eighteenth most-developed country and its Quality-of-Life Index has been ranked in the top ten in the world. Italy enjoys a very high standard of living, and has a high nominal GDP per capita. It is a founding member of what is now the European Union and North Atlantic Treaty Organization. Italy is also a member of the G7, G8 and G20. It has the world's seventh-largest nominal GDP, tenth highest GDP (PPP) and the sixth highest government budget in the world. It is also a member state of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development, the World Trade Organization, the Council of Europe, the Western European Union and the United Nations. Italy has the world's ninth-largest defence budget and shares NATO's nuclear weapons.

Italy plays a prominent role in European and global military, cultural and diplomatic affairs, and it is affiliated with worldwide organizations such as the Food and Agriculture Organization, World Food Programme, International Fund for Agricultural Development, Glocal Forum, and the NATO Defence College, which are headquartered in Rome. The country's European political, social and economic influence make it a major regional power, alongside the United Kingdom, France, Germany, and Russia. The country has a high public education level, high labour force, and it's a highly globalised nation.

What is Italy planning to do with the declining population?
Q. Right now the population of Italy is 58 million, and in 2050 it is estimated to be 41 million. Has the Italian government done anything to encourage women to have more children? As the population gets lower will the level of immigration raise or be lowered? And how doe the Italian government decide how many legal immigrants to accept per year?

A. In the last years both the former Italian government (Berlusconi) and the current (Prodi) have seriously considered the problem and allocated a certain sum for any new baby. The fact is that nowadays the cost to grow up a child is ugly higher than the incentive any family will get for any new born. The biggest issue in our future is the welfare in general (medical assistance, common services, ect) and the pensions in particular. In fact with the increase of no-working people for retirement there will be less working peole paying contributions for the new pensions and unlesss there is an inversion in this tendence the system will collapse. At the time being we are already at a stage where an important part of contributes are paid by the… [cont.]

How important are provinces to people living in Italy?
Q. I understand that Italy is divided into 15 regions. The regions are made up of several different provinces. I noticed that most of the provinces share the name of their capital city. Naples is in Naples Province, Chieti in Chieti, etc. So how important are provinces in Italy? Is it comparable to counties here? For example: United States> State of Texas > Harris County > City of Houston Italy > Campania Region > Naples Province > City of Naples Is that right? I guess what I want to know is how often do people in Italy refer to their province? Do they ever say it's where they live, or are they more likely to name their region instead?

A. It depends how far from home you are really. If you travel out of the province, you'd refer to your province as your home. I've never really met anyone who would say "I'm from the Campania region". They'd most likely say their province, but if the person they are talking to knows the area, they'll probably refer to their actual city or town as their home. Just think of it this way... if you went to a different state, you'd say that you were from Texas (unless the city you're from is a major city like Houston, then say that instead). If you said, "l'm from 'Hicksville' they'd have no clue where that is. right? Hope this helps

A. If you have a degree - or any alternative qualification - then you'll already be in front of of the masses when it comes to searching for professions. My friend has a degree and he wasn't certain what direction to go with it, but he uncovered some excellent guidance on the website in the resource box below which guided him to settle that he wanted to be a lab assistant. There is plenty of guidance on the website regarding alternative professions.
