FrenchNouninfrastructure f. (plural infrastructures)
From Wiktionary under the GNU Free Documentation License. Infrastructure is the basic physical and organizational structures needed for the operation of a society or enterprise, or the services and facilities necessary for an economy to function. The term typically refers to the technical structures that support a society, such as roads, water supply, sewers, power grids, telecommunications, and so forth. Viewed functionally, infrastructure facilitates the production of goods and services; for example, roads enable the transport of raw materials to a factory, and also for the distribution of finished products to markets. In some contexts, the term may also include basic social services such as schools and hospitals. In military parlance, the term refers to the buildings and permanent installations necessary for the support, redeployment, and operation of military forces. In this article, infrastructure will be used in the sense of technical structures or physical networks that support society, unless specified otherwise. From Wikipedia under the
GNU Free Documentation License Why is the infrastructure so bad in most places in the USA for pedestrians and bicyclists ? Q. As a Scandinavian living in California . I am amazed how lousy and inconvinient everything is for bicyclists and pedestrians. Why is bike trails only something that is used for recreation, and why is it not part of the infrastructure for transportation ? And why are there so few running trails, nicely marked loops from 2.5 to 10 km and lighted at night. Where am I supposed to go run ? On some tread mill or at some high school track ( oh I cant do that either because the lock the gates to early ) Asked by trollmannen - Sun Jul 16 01:50:48 2006 - - 7 Answers - 0 Comments A. Whenever I'm in Finland or Sweden I'm amazed as well. I'm out in the middle of nowhere, a few miles from the nearest town, and there are bike trails including underpasses at the occasional intersection all the way to the next town. I think it's great! Of course, I also realize that I can drive from one end of the country to the other in one day. The size of the US is such that we will never have the kind of access to describe. It isn't just the size of the country. It is also a matter of tax policy and social priorities. Americans (including myself) are not willing to pay the taxes (nor forego the liberites) required of a socialist system that might execute on such an infrastructure change. Of course, given what does motivate… [cont.] Answered by fathead - Sun Jul 16 02:07:49 2006 What infrastructure has been damaged in Haiti? Q. With the recent earthquake in Haiti, what infrastructure has been damaged, such as electricity, water supply, sewers and telecommunications. Also what other problems have been caused, I already know about: death, damage, aid problems and corruption, are their any other problems Haiti faced/will face apart from those mentioned and possibly a future earthquake Also, how has the economy been affected in Haiti? Yes kamalesh, I know it is an earthquake, and you're so stupid you can't spell earthquake. Asked by Snowrock - Sat Feb 13 05:13:00 2010 - - 5 Answers - 0 Comments A. Haiti has the poorest economy in the Western Hemisphere. The donations and government aid will have limited impact after the rulers and the international bureaucracy steal or waste the result in resumption to the horrible poverty that existed one month ago. The corruption you recognize. The nation has a 50 percent illiteracy rate and 80 percent of the population live below the poverty line. There is no material help beyond just preserving life. Q. I'm considering purchasing a fairly large, undeveloped plot of land (around 16 acres) in San Diego county to build my own house. How much would it cost to put in the infrastructure for it? (e.g. electric, water, gas, sewage, paved roads) I'm just looking for VERY approximated guesses. If someone were to tell me $1000, $10,000, or $100,000, I wouldn't be able to say which were closest to reality. Also, what kind of time frame would we be looking at? Thanks in advance. P.S. If you'd like to recommend a construction company to handle this type of this, I'd appreciate that too. Asked by henrytut2 - Sat Jul 14 21:16:30 2007 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments A. The costs on these things very greatly ,depending on your local. Also things such as the properties accessability ,how far away the workforce needed is ,area ordinaces, local permit fees, impact fees all affect the costs. A local general contractor will be able to give you accurate cost estimates.
