Henri Matisse (French pronunciation: [ɑ̃ʁi matis]; 31 December 1869 – 3 November 1954) was a French artist, known for his use of colour and his fluid and original draughtsmanship. He was a draughtsman, printmaker, and sculptor, but is known primarily as a painter. Matisse is regarded, along with Picasso and Marcel Duchamp, as one of the three seminal artists of the 20th century, responsible for significant developments in painting and sculpture. Although he was initially labelled a Fauve (wild beast), by the 1920s he was increasingly hailed as an upholder of the classical tradition in French painting. His mastery of the expressive language of colour and drawing, displayed in a body of work spanning over a half-century, won him recognition as a leading figure in modern art. From Wikipedia under the

From Google News Search: "Matisse" What are the differences between Andy Warhol and Henry Matisse? Q. Can anyone please compare and contrast Andy Warhol and Henry Matisse? Who are they and what are their personal styles when it comes to their artwork? and also, how are they the same? Thank You. Asked by Joy A - Sun Apr 25 17:45:39 2010 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments A. The differences are rather enormous. Warhol was a Pop artist of the mid-century and later; Matisse began working around the turn of the 20th century and made his mark as a Fauvist, though as a recent exhibition has illustrated, he made a four-year foray into Cubism and related studies during World War I. By the tiem Warhol became famous, Matisse was dead. I think you need to read as much as you can about both artists, on as many sites and in as many books as you can, and study the works. The differences should be fairly clear. The sites below are just a start. There are others and, as I said, books to be read.
