Libreville (population 578,156 January 1, 2005) is the capital and largest city of Gabon. The city is a port on the Komo River, near the Gulf of Guinea, and a trade center for a timber region.

History

The area was inhabited by the Mpongwé tribe long before the French acquired the land in 1839. In 1846, L'Elizia, a Brazilian ship carrying slaves for sale, was captured by the French navy near Loango. The slaves were freed and founded Libreville (French for "Freetown") in 1848. It was the chief port of French Equatorial Africa from 1934 to 1946 and was the central focus of the Battle of Gabon in 1940.

Libreville was named in imitation of Freetown and grew only slowly as a trading post and a minor administrative centre to a population of 32,000 on independence in 1960. It only received its first bank branch when Bank of West Africa (BAO) opened a branch in 1930. Since independence, the city has grown rapidly and now houses nearly half the national population.

Why should Pope John Paul II be canonized as a Saint??
Q. His crazed actions made him a further laughing-stock as he engaged in numerous outrages against the Catholic Faith, including the following: 1) On May 4, 1980, he presided from a straw hut over an ordination ceremony and native Mess of people undulating to the rhythm of tom-toms, accompanied by accordions and guitars. 2) In 1981, he sat on his throne while acrobatic performers, dressed in little more than a g-string, performed in the modernistic Hall of Paul VI at the Vatican. 3) In February 1982, he presided over a "dance" Mess in Libreville. 4) On December 11, 1983, he preached in a Lutheran church at Rome. 5) On May 8, 1984, he presided over a Mess in Papua-New Guinea at which male and female dancers, nude from the waist up, danced;… [cont.]

A 39th La Liga fixture to be played around the world?
Q. Is it really going to happen? Coz i havent heard any follow up news to that. For those not familiar, La Liga had planned a 39th Juego (an extra fixture, currently they only have 38 games in their calendar). This game will be held in places outside of Spain starting the 2010-2011 season. The venues selected are: Bogota, Colombia Umtata, South Africa Lahore, Pakistan Libreville, Gabon Seoul, South Korea Stuttgart, Germany Halifax, Canada Indianapolis, USA Tomsk, Russia Taipei, Taiwan It's obviously for marketing reasons but I still think its a great idea footy wise. Your thoughts? valencianista: its more about promoting the game i guess. the epl is also doing it btw.. nazone: match will count..yeah japan should be there, peepz there… [cont.]

A. a very unusual idea they came up with...i don't think it's a very good idea, if they're going to add more fixtures might as well play them back in Spain...and is it even possible that 39 matches are played? in which case they should become 40 adding 1 more team into the league, since it has to be an even number of fixtures, unless this was just an extra thing... and also for players to regenerate and avoid higher risk of injury.
